He found, between the obsolete pages, a single user named "StitchFixer" who spoke like his grandmother: patient, plain, practical. StitchFixer suggested a sequence of commands and an ancient compatibility DLL. The DLL’s download link was hosted on a personal FTP server with a handwritten title: "do not lose."
