The first film produced in Kerala was "Balan" (1938), a social drama directed by S. Nottanandan. However, it was the 1950s and 1960s that marked the beginning of the state's film industry, with movies like "Nirmala" (1948) and "Sneham" (1955) gaining popularity. These early films laid the foundation for the growth of Mollywood, which would go on to produce some remarkable films over the years.
