Kendrick's music career began when he was just 13 years old, under the stage name K-Dot. He released his debut mixtape, "Youngest Head Nigga in Charge," in 2006, which caught the attention of Top Dawg Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based record label. Top Dawg signed Kendrick in 2009, and he began working on his debut album.
